An autopsy arranged by the US family of George Floyd shows he was suffocated by a policeman, rather than dying from pre-existing heart problems as claimed by the official ruling, their lawyer announced Monday.

“Independent medical examiners who conducted an autopsy of Floyd Sunday determined that asphyxiation from sustained pressure was the cause of death,” Ben Crump said.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner (ME) who conducted the autopsy for the official ruling says that asphyxia was not the cause of death. George Floyd had underlying health issues including hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease.

The killing of unarmed African American Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis last Monday has sparked six nights of furious nationwide demonstrations against police brutality and racism.
